Mulbarton Extend Winning Run to 8 Games

Calum Burke25 Mar - 17:00

Anglian Combination Division 3 South - Matchday 21

Mulbarton’s good run of form continued as they travelled to South Norfolk counterparts Harleston Town Reserves. Harleston enjoyed an excellent midweek performance against 2nd place Sprowston and the dry ground of Wilderness Lane made it difficult conditions for both teams.

Mulbarton started quickly within the first 5 minutes, a chance landing at the hands of Buttery who despite rounding the keeper, was unable to covert from a tight angle, firing just wide of the post. The first goal game in the 10th minute from a deep ball from Burke, playing a lofted pass over the top of the defence, as Wooltorton and his defender stopped, an inverted run from Reeve meant he took advantage going through 1v1, and finishing into the corner of the goal inside the 18 yard box. Reeve notching his 15th of the season from 18 games and continues his great season out wide.

Minutes later, Burke then became goal scorer, as excellent feet and hold up play from Buttery assisted a pass along the edge of the box which met Burke's late run, stroking home first time into the corner past the Harleston GK. Burke's hit good form of late, with his 3rd goal in four games.

3-0 came inside the first 30 minutes as Jamie Edwards’ ball down the left channel met Buddy Reeve, the former’s run into the box distracting two defenders as Reeve opted to play inside for Mulbarton's big forward Buttery, who turned and dribbled to the box's D, and rifled an effort into the bottom corner of the goal, beating the GK's outstretched arm.

Several further opportunities presented themselves for Buttery and Reeve whose shots were routinely saved by the Harleston #1.

Soon after the 3rd goal, momentum swung in favour of Harleston as captain Leory Bowers departed following an impact injury to his knee. Within minutes, Harleston had claimed a goal back as throw in from wide was poorly defended and a fell kindly to a Harleston player on the edge of the box to strike a rasping effort beyond Thompson in the Mulbarton net.

Harleston almost scored another following a cheap free kick on the edge of the box and were fortunate that Thompson's post came to the rescue.

HT 3-1.

The second half resumed with the reintroduction of Bowers and a disciplined defensive performance from the team limited the home team. Mulbarton created several chances to extend their lead with Edwards superb effort hitting the woodwork and some wasteful efforts from Buttery and Reeve.

The final goal came in the 65th minute as Cozens released Jamie Edwards beyond the defence, who before reaching the goal line, cut back and played into the feet of Burke, who's lay off was struck on the half volley into the top corner by substitute Josh Walker. Walker scoring his 4th goal of the season and also his 4th volley.

The game finished 4-1 to Mulbarton who remain and extend their lead on 2nd place Sprowston, following their result against Harleston earlier in the week.

The Sir Toby’s Beers MOM was awarded to Buttery.
